Played the 1925 designed South Toledo GC that's across the street four (4) years ago and now we're back to play Heather Downs CC also designed in 1925. With four (4) tees you can choose from Blues 6,250yds / 70.6 / 128 down to Reds at 4,912yds / 69.0 / 120 on this flat to rolling and then wooded Par 35/36 layout. With our Senior pricing of $27.00 for 18/cart, Mark P and I decided to play the Blues on this cool August morning. The Front 9 starts with two (2) very flat holes (350yd Par 4 & 475yd Par 5) and we thought, "Where's an Arthur Hills challenge"? The #4 Par 4 at 376yds has you playing to the 150yd marker or a steep but thick rough grassy downhill will trap your ball, making it very difficult to hit this Hcp 1 small green. The #5 downhill Par 3 at 193-151yds looks a lot like your 2nd shot on #4 from 150yds. Missing short front left or long left can set you up for a save but not on the right side. The #6 Par 4 at 447yds starts with a narrow drive chute, over a ravine with a 190yd carry to grab the flat fairway on this Hpc 3 hole. The #8 Par 4 at 385yds was playing into the wind and with two (2) trap squeezing the fairway at the 110-60yd marker has the smart tee play to the 125yd spot. The #9 355yd Par 4 has a treelined but flat fairway sweeping right to this narrow green. The #10 is a sweeping RH treelined (Tall and Thick) fairway that sets up for a 220yd fade drive very nicely. The #11 Par 4 at 322yds has a 215-230yd drive down the RH side looking at the tucked left green. The #12 at 402yds sweeping right is a very narrow driving/landing hole, protecting its Hcp 2 rating. The #15 Par 4 at 377yds is shot but with water left/front of green 60yds in, your miss is rightside thick rough. The #16 is a full water carry 131yd shot to this Par 3 green, into the wind and when your ball is above the trees, it shuts down one (1) club. (Hint) The #17 Par 5 at 532yds is just long and narrow through the trees that canopy the fairway so, keep it low. The #18 at 363yds is the same narrow layout as #17 but with a front trap guarding this elevated green. For the price, conditions and challenge today we felt it was money well spent with Mark P shooting 80 w/27putts and Me at 84 w/30putts. Some of the tee boxes (Mainly Par 3's) needed some TLC to fix divots and remove weeds. The fairways were mowed great and rough sticky but playable. Sand traps (fairway & greenside) were mainly heavy sand/dirt but had been power raked and still were very firm. Worth the money to stop and play here and see the roots of a established 1925 challenging layout.
